SOUNDBOMBING II SNIPPET.

Arguably the best hip hop compilation of the late 90’s, Rawkus records “Soundbombing II” was cramped full with big tracks.

From the smooth sounds of Reflection Eternal and Shabaam Sahdeeq to the rawness of Company Flow and RA The Rugged Man this compilation from 1999 showed that Rawkus records was the best and most varied hip hop label of the time. As history show they failed to maintain this, at the time, not often seen balance between commercial and underground, none the less, “Soundbombing II” is a fantastic compilation from the peak time of Rawkus records.

The Beat Junkies mixed this snippet tape to promote it’s May 18 1999 release.

STANKY.

“Stanky Legg” by G-Spot Boyz has got a new slick major label video but it’s the home-video version that fit best and with 4.5 million views most people seem to agree.

Thanks to my friend Jonas for the word about the Boyz.

FUKUDA SENSEI.

The Japanese master graphic artist Sigeo Fukuda passed away a couple of weeks ago at the age of 76. For me Fukuda was the most inspiring of all graphic artists of the older generation combining a classic approach with a big dose of subtle yet sparkling humor and curiosity. Fukuda made a vast line of posters, many of them with satirical anti-war messages as seen on the right.

Later in his career Fukuda started working extensively with sculpture where he transferred his illusionistic style from his poster works to the three dimensional media. He managed to make the impossible possible when he built a model of Escher’s “Waterfall” 1985.

“I believe that in design, 30 percent dignity, 20 percent beauty and 50 percent absurdity are necessary” – Shigeo Fukuda.

DA LOOPTROOP.

On a recent trip back to my parents house I started going through old cassette tapes from the 90’s. There I found the eminent demo tape “Threesicksteez” by Swedens biggest hip hop export LoopTroop.

The track below is “CosMIC Supremecy” and it’s a shame it never came out on record because it’s probably one of my most favorite Looptroop tracks. “Threesicksteez” from 1995 was the tape were Looptroop became a quartet and CosMIC joined the three members Promoe, Supreme and DJ Embee, at that time called Da Looptroop.

SALEM.

Salem is showing that screw can be applied to more than just country rap. The duo from New York (and producer from Chicago) is responsible for some of the most exciting tracks coming out last year, especially “Sweat” that feel like a beginning of something brand new.

This is what it would’ve sounded like if Curt Cobain was still alive after Nirvana split and Curt became a recloose in a log cabin somewhere in Ottawa programming drums on a Dr Rhythm.
